Therapeutic Approach

I am a yoga therapist and nervous system regulation specialist. My role is to help individuals find a way to live with greater ease and comfort in their bodies, to heal from chronic stress and trauma, and to find tools that allow them to feel more confident and fully alive. Every person has a nervous system and a body that carry the stories of our lives; our joys, sorrows, pains, worries, and traumas. From the moment we come into the world, everything we experience impacts our nervous systems; sometimes with lasting effects that can lead to disease and suffering. This may leave us feeling overwhelmed by the sensations in our bodies or sometimes very disconnected from our bodies. Some people experience both. There can be an experience of discomfort, confusion, and/or a sense of being out of control in our bodies, which can amplify our distress.

My goal during sessions is to create a space where people can feel safe in their bodies and learn to explore their embodied reality from a place of curiosity and care. I believe that learning to listen to our bodies by developing the ability to notice, name and respond to sensations allows us to access insight into our lives, our emotional states, and our physical bodies. This can allow us to move through life with confidence and greater self-compassion. I am also passionate about helping clients establish a tool belt of functional skills that can help them to better cope in a world filled with stressors. Together we can address maladaptive stress coping patterns within the body which leads to emotional healing, drastically improved resilience, and improved biomarkers of stress-tolerance.

The word “yoga” can sometimes feel intimidating or off-putting for some. Rest assured there are no prerequisites to being able to engage in body-based (somatic) therapy. As long as you can breathe, you are safe and welcome to do the work with me! Sessions with me will look different for every person and we will start from where you are; creating a safe and respectful space together that honors your unique life story and experience. Depending on your interests and goals, we may do some yoga postures, some Qing Gong movements, some gentle seated movements, mindfulness-based stress reduction practices, breathing practices, and/or guided meditation. I put a strong emphasis on evidence-based, non-invasive therapies.  If you have other providers supporting you, such as a therapist or prescriber, with your permission, I will collaborate directly with that provider so you receive coordinated, integrative care in your healing journey.
