Mindfulness Counseling and Therapy

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the process of bringing one’s attention to your present moment experiences without judgement and without analysis. It is simply noting, naming, and watching what happens next. Mindfulness can be practiced as a form of sitting or walking meditation and self-management skill.

How is it used in counseling?

In therapy, mindfulness is taught as a skill to help clients slow down their reactions to things they are experiencing and to relax their body. This can help them increase their sense of control and self-confidence as well as develop a quieter mind and more relaxed physical state. Mindfulness can also be used to improve communication skills and behavior. It has been found helpful in building a sense of calm, well-being, and empathy.

Who can benefit from it?

We can work with you individually or as part of your care team:

If you have already established a relationship you value with a therapist or other provider but are interested in also trying one of these interventions, feel free to give us a call. We are happy to coordinate your care with any of your current providers and offer these interventions in addition to what you are already doing. We can all work together to bring you the results you are looking for.

How you will benefit from somatic therapy:

  1. You will find yourself having less of a reaction to previously triggering memories and experiences. When the biological components of one’s experience are addressed in addition to the cognitive components, a more thorough processing of memories can take place. Long held muscle tension, established neurological patterns, and automatic emotional and behavioral responses can be transformed into healthier responses.
  2. You will develop a stronger, more reliable sense of control of and comfort in your body. By more deeply incorporating a person’s physiology as part of their treatment for emotional distress, clients can more successfully notice the earliest signs of emotional triggers. This gives clients more awareness of what is happening for them so they have more time to utilize a wide variety of cognitive and behavioral skills to interrupt unpleasant experiences and emotions.
