Therapeutic Approach

As a therapist, I take an open and flexible approach. I don’t tell you how to talk or what is important; I ask you to tell me about your world and what matters most to you and we go from there.

My work is grounded in an Existential framework and weaves in the techniques of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Self-Psychology, Interpersonal Psychotherapy and other helpful techniques along the way. This means I value each person’s individual quest for meaning in the world.

Questions we will wonder about together include: What are the changes you want to see in yourself? What has stood in your way? Together we will stop, take stock, and, while appreciating your natural style and tendencies, help you gain the skills to forge ahead in new ways. I will give you feedback and ideas from my experience and professional training as you and I work together to clarify what is worthwhile and most important to you so you can manage the ups and downs of life, face challenging circumstances you may be adjusting to, and/or find freedom from old patterns of thought and behavior that no longer work for you.

I feel hopeful about our ability to make change in our lives; to feel more comfortable with who we are on a deeper level, and to have more peace on a daily basis.

Education, Specialized Training and Experience

2007 Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Seattle Pacific University

1987 Certificate in Alcohol and Drug Studies, Seattle University.

1987 M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling, Seattle University.

I have been a licensed therapist and substance abuse professional for 35+ years. In my Ph.D. program I studied Health Psychology and completed a dissertation about coping with internal defibrillators in the field of cardiac psychology. On my journey I learned a lot about managing anxiety and depression symptoms so they do not take over our lives.

My practice includes working with people in all phases of adult life; including facing new challenges with aging, changes in health or circumstance, and coping with loss. I work with individuals who are diagnosed with depression (including bipolar depression and postpartum depression), anxiety conditions and those who have ongoing concerns related to challenging backgrounds, marriages, or childhoods.
