Mindfulness Counseling and Therapy

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to your present moment experiences without judgement and without analysis. It is simply noting, naming, and watching what happens next. Mindfulness can be practiced as a form of sitting or walking meditation and self-management skill.

How is it used in counseling?

In therapy, mindfulness is taught as a skill to help clients slow down their reactions to things they are experiencing and to relax their body. This can help them increase their sense of control and self-confidence as well as develop a quieter mind and more relaxed physical state. Mindfulness can also be used to improve communication skills and behavior. It has been found helpful in building a sense of calm, well-being, and empathy.
